Abstract: This dissertationproposes a novel concept for a user interface device capable to deform its shape and to produce a wide area haptic feedback. The device is based on a deformablemechanicalstructure that morphs its shape in order to imitate a desired object. Due to its physical presence, it can intuitively be touched and explored. As such, this dissertation also proposes a novel approach to the design and implementation of "Digital Clay", an interface affording direct input and output of 3D structures.
